How We Make Ridged Slate
We take tiles of cleft, natural slate with thickness variation from 10 ~15 mm and trim it down to a standardised thickness. Then, we send the tiles through a machine with a diamond helicoid shaft that produces the ridges and ensures all the ridges are straight and perfectly parallel to the edges and at a regular depth. At the same time, the tiles go through a diamond brushing process combined with synthetic brushing pads. This helps to achieve a smooth, consistent and slightly shinning product. It is then washed, dried and then ready for the sign-making process.
How we Make Our Ridged Slate House Signs
The artwork is created on a computer by one of our designers, and a vinyl mask is produced. The washed and dried, ridged slate is cut to the desired size. It is then covered with a vinyl mask to protect it during the process. The mask allows the sand blasting process to etch your house name or number without damaging the rest of the plate. The sign is then sandblasted by one of our experienced craftspeople, who then proceeds to hand paint the lettering / number in your chosen colour. When the plate is fully dry, the mask is removed, and the sign is cleaned and ready for dispatch. Finally, the sign undergoes our robust quality control procedure, is signed off, and is ready for delivery.
Personalised signs, numbers, letterboxes and pet memorials are bespoke items made to your specification and are therefore non-returnable unless they are damaged in transit or made incorrectly by us (i.e. spelling errors).
